Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi is a
Nigerian/British feminist and entrepreneur. She is the co-founder and former
Executive Director of the AWDF.
She was previously the Director
of Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA), an international development organization for
African women based in the UK, with an Africa regional office in Kampala,
Uganda.
Born in Liverpool, England, on 11
June, 1963. Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi She has an M.A in History from the University
of Ife, Ile-Ife Nigeria, and an M.A. in Gender Studies from Middlesex
University, UK.
She is a Principal Partner at
Amandla Consulting, specializing in leadership development for women, and she
runs an online community called Abovewhispers.com, where she writes a weekly
column called "Loud Whispers". She is a UN Women Nigeria Senior
Advisor, and was recently appointed as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at
King's College, University of London.
Mrs Bisi Fayemi spent part of her
elementary periods in one of Nigeria’s most prestigious academic institutions,
Grace Schools, and has greatly projected the school in such an enviable light.
She is a prolific writer,
lecturer, trainer, and as an organisational development specialist. She has
expertise in fundraising and organisational development, and training expertise
in feminist leadership development and resource mobilisation. She
conceptualised the African Women’s Leadership Institute, a leadership
development program for young African women which has helped train over 2,000
women leaders in Africa over the past ten years.
She has served as Co-Chair
International Network of Women’s Funds (2004-2006), Board Member Partnership
for Transparency Fund (2004-2007), International Adviser, Global Fund for
Women, Adviser, Mamacash Foundation, Editorial Board Member, Alliance magazine,
and board member, International Women’s Health Coalition (2006-2009).
She is a Senior Fellow of the
Synergos Institute, and has served as a Trustee of Comic Relief (UK) and
President, Association for Women’s Rights in Development, Toronto (AWID)
(2003-2005). She has written and published several articles on feminist
leadership, popular culture and women’s human rights.
Mrs Bisi Fayemi is the epitome of
philanthropy and has shown that famous philanthropists don’t have to come from
wealthy families and that they can choose the causes that have the most meaning
for them.
She has shown that she
understands lifelong growth is possible and continues to grow by contributing
outside herself to make a big difference in the lives of others.
She remains one of the most
outspoken female philanthropists who backs up her monetary contributions with
efforts to enact social and political change
